The First Thanksgiving

I wrote this poem to express some of my feelings on my first Thanksgiving without my wife.

The First Thanksgiving

I've held the tears in all day long, so far I have been strong.
But now the turkey's put away, and everyone is gone.
Your name was mentioned once or twice, we shared a laugh or two.
The food was great we all had fun, but still, there was no you.
Despite the tears and pain I feel, I still want to proclaim,
I have so much I'm grateful for, though life is not the same.
Through this trial of separation, I have come to know
These hardships that we must endure, are here to help us grow.
I'm grateful for the love we share, a marriage without end.
I'm grateful that I know this truth, I'll see you once again.
I'm grateful for our Savior's love, for His redeeming grace.
Because of His great sacrifice, again I'll see your face.
I pray that you are happy there, and feeling grateful too.
Continue to watch over me, as always, I love you.
