The Sermon

One Sunday at church, I watched as a young teenage girl went to the pulpit to address our congregation. Seemingly nervous, she struggled to begin and deliver her remarks. Her father, seeing her pain, went to her side to be a support to her. Borrowing from his faith and belief in her, she delivered her sermon on faith. This experience and her talk touched my heart and inspired me to write this poem.

The Sermon

She stood before the crowd with eyes of tears
Emotions overflowing from her heart
And yet she yielded not unto her fears
She stood filled with desire that she might start
And as the tears flowed help came to her side
Her father reassured her tenderly
And then he looked upon her filled with pride
As words flowed from her tongue deliberately
And so she gave the talk she had prepared
Faith was the subject of the words she spoke
Her sermon was far more than thoughts she shared
‘Twas found in feelings her actions evoked
