A Stinky Fate

In case you're in need of a little humor to brighten your day, here's my latest poem, adapted from this true pioneer tale,

A Stinky Fate

A Mormon pioneer I was, once upon a time.
Miles and miles and miles I walked, and many hills I climbed.
One night on guard, I heard a sound, a critter, he was near.
I grabbed my gun, but my friend said, “Don't shoot! The camp will hear.
It is a woodcock, I believe, go kill him with your club.”
So off I went then in pursuit, that his life I might snub.
And so I chased the little beast, but as I beat him dead,
My friend returned. “I got it wrong, that beast’s a skunk!” he said.
Despite the warning from my friend, his caution came too late.
For I was covered from that skunk, he'd sealed my stinky fate.
