The Resurrection and the Life

I wrote this poem three years ago and it showed up in my memories today. With all that is going on, my poem reminded me that Christ is the master of life and death and reigns supreme. No matter how bad or crazy people and this world get, in the end, He will ensure this world is filled with light and love, two things we need so much more of as an antidote to all that is wrong.

The Resurrection and the Life

A certain man named Lazarus, lay sick in Bethany.
His sisters, Martha, Mary too, did worry, so you see.
And so they sent word to the Lord, “Thy friend, in sickness, lies.”
But Jesus knew, that through this yet, He might be glorified.
Then Jesus, He did worry not, and tarried two more days,
Before He told His followers, “Let us be on our way.”
At Bethany, He found His friend, four days he had been dead.
“He would have lived, if thou’d been here,” unto Him, Martha said.
“But I know what thou ask of God, He’ll give it unto thee.”
And Jesus saith, “Thy brother dear, shall rise again indeed.”
Unto the Lord she did reply, “I know what thou doth say,
Through resurrection he shall rise, made whole the final day.”
“The resurrection and the life, I am,” to her, He said.
“And he that doth believe in me, shall live though he were dead.
“And whoso doth believe in me, that man shall never die.”
And Martha said, “Yea, I believe, Thou art the living Christ.”
Unto her sister Martha went, “The Master calls for thee.”
So Mary left, and those nearby, thought she had gone to weep.
Then Mary came where Jesus was, and at His feet she cried.
“Oh Lord, if only thou hadst come, my brother had not died.”
And as He watched dear Mary weep, He groaned in agony.
“Where have ye laid him?” Jesus asked.
The Jews said, “Come and see.”
And Jesus wept, oh what a man! His heart full to the brim!
Then said the Jews, who witnessed this, “Behold how He loved him!”
“Could not this man save Lazarus?” some there asked with surprise.
“This man who hath wrought miracles, and opened blind men's eyes?”
Again He groaned within Himself, and cometh to the grave.
A stone did cover Lazarus, his body in a cave.
Then Jesus said, “Remove the stone.” But Martha did protest.
“Oh Lord, his body stinketh now, Four days it's been at rest.”
“Dear Martha, did I not declare, that if thou would believe,
Before thine eyes thou should behold, God’s glory here indeed?”
They took the stone then from that place. He shouted to his friend.
And Lazarus who had been dead, came forth and walked again.
Then many there who saw these things, on Him they did believe.
But others simply walked away, to inform Pharisees.
Now each of us must make this choice. Will we have faith in Christ,
The Lord of resurrection true, and too, eternal life?
